Gambling and digitalization – an industry needs new framework conditions

On 12.03.2018 a press conference took place in the press club Concordia on the topic “Gambling and digitalisation – an industry needs new framework conditions” (invitation). During the press conference, the Austrian Association for Betting and Gaming (OVWG) provided information on the economic, tax policy and European legal effects of the forthcoming draft law amending the Gaming Act. In addition, Claus Retschitzegger (President OVWG) and Raffaela Zillner (Secretary General OVWG) described the current situation for online providers on the Austrian market and presented alternative regulatory options. In this context, Andreas Kreutzer, Kreutzer Fischer & Partner, also presented the results of the current study: Glücksspiel & Sportwetten im Internet. Approaches to a new regulatory framework. For online gambling, Kreutzer recommended an opening of the online market, derived from the study results: “At present there is only one online license. It would be timely and practicable to link market participation to player protection and crime prevention instead of establishing a maximum number of licences”.
